Expectations

Wow. The response to the notion of SxDS has been many things.

  • Awesome
  • Humbling
  • Scary
  • Encouraging
  • Diverse

Based on the diversity of the comments (and of the potential areas of interest), it’s become apparent that we’re looking at the same name (and logo) with different degrees and layers of expectations.

So — tell us:

  • What do you want to get out of SxDS?
  • What size groups are your ideal for interaction?

That will go a long way in determining how much help we’ll need in putting this together, how much sponsor help we might need to solicit…

My original vision was somewhere between Blogger Social and SxSW — WAY closer to the Blogger Social end of things.  What we might end up with are five “Blogger Social” style unconferences going on in the same city, with ample crossover opportunities.  The PR/Marketing people, the Web Development people, the Code People — we all can coexist, as long as we don’t assume that everyone wants to sit through the same sessions.

SXSW this year, as I understand from those I follow at Twitter, was very much about people, socializing, parties…the sessions themselves (Sarah Lacy and the social media metrics panels notwithstanding) seem to take a back seat. I don’t know if it was that companies are embracing SXSWi more than previously (hence, more parties), but it did seem that’s what everyone was talking about.

That being said, I don’t know that we need to get too much more social than that. Personally, I put a lot of stock in having interesting, educational sessions. Maybe a barcamp, unconference approach, but still with some facilitated sessions as a skeleton at least.

I do like the idea of five different tracks going on simultaneously based on interest areas. That’s a good idea.

Ike, please know that I’m happy to do whatever I can to help you make this happen. That includes doing grunt work.

I just heard about this from @lalunablanca, and would be willing to help.
